Interfacing Arduino with Fingerprint Sensor

The fingerprint sensor reads human fingerprints with using Arduino UNO as process the data. In addition to reading the fingerprint, we will be learning how to save in the database and how to remove it.

Hardware Requirement
  • Fingerprint Sensor (Unknow type, look at the image)
  • Arduino UNO
  • Power supply +5 Volt

Register Fingerprint Data

Fingerprint sensor before use, need to be filled with someone fingerprint data, both for security systems and attendance systems. With Arduino, we can use the library provided by Adafruit Download here. For fingerprint entry we just use the 'Enroll' program that already exists in 'example' in the library.

  - > From File menu> Examples> Adafruit Fingerprint Sensor> enroll.

Source Code --> Enroll

#include <Adafruit_Fingerprint.h>
#include <SoftwareSerial.h>

uint8_t id;

uint8_t getFingerprintEnroll();

// Software serial for when you dont have a hardware serial port
// pin #2 is IN from sensor (GREEN wire)
// pin #3 is OUT from arduino  (WHITE wire)
// On Leonardo/Micro/Yun, use pins 8 & 9. On Mega, just grab a hardware serialport
SoftwareSerial mySerial(2, 3);
Adafruit_Fingerprint finger = Adafruit_Fingerprint(&mySerial);

// On Leonardo/Micro or others with hardware serial, use those! #0 is green wire, #1 is white
//Adafruit_Fingerprint finger = Adafruit_Fingerprint(&Serial1);

Upload it to Arduino board

Open Serial Monitor, and baud rate set is : 9600 // Carriage return

First, fill in the code for the fingerprint data to be scanned and to save it. Ex the code is 6.

Click the Send button or press Enter

Put the finger down to the surface of fingerprint sensor with correct position as an image below

Look back on the serial monitor

Remove the fingerprint from the sensor. Wait until there is a request to put the fingerprint back again or its same as the first one.

Put the same fingerprint again, wait until the conversion is complete.

The fingerprint will be stored with the code '6'.
To enter other fingerprint data, do the same. Previously also give a code first for fingerprints that will scanned. and don't forget to Give it a different code.

Fingerprint testing

Its function is to try the fingerprints that have been saved, whether it is in accordance with that code or not.

Open the 'fingerprint' program in Examples> Adafruits Fingerprint Sensor> fingerprint.

Upload to Arduino board

Open Serial Monitor, and baud rate set is : 9600 // Carriage return

Put it down the same finger on the fingerprint sensor

Wait until the process is complete, that means it has found the code (ID) of the fingerprint.

Menghapus data sidik jari

Its function is to remove the fingerprint ID, that has been stored in memory fingerprint sensor, if necessary.

Open the program "Delete" in Examples> Adafruits Fingerprint Sensor> delete.

Source Code --> Delete

#include <Adafruit_Fingerprint.h>
#include <SoftwareSerial.h>

uint8_t getFingerprintEnroll(uint8_t id);

SoftwareSerial mySerial(2, 3);
Adafruit_Fingerprint finger = Adafruit_Fingerprint(&mySerial);

// On Leonardo/Micro or others with hardware serial, use those! #0 is green wire, #1 is white
//Adafruit_Fingerprint finger = Adafruit_Fingerprint(&Serial1);

void setup()
{
  Serial.begin(9600);
  Serial.println("Delete Finger");

  // set the data rate for the sensor serial port
  finger.begin(57600);

  if (finger.verifyPassword()) {
    Serial.println("Found fingerprint sensor!");
  } else {
    Serial.println("Did not find fingerprint sensor :(");
    while (1);
  }
}

void loop()                     // run over and over again

  delay(500);

  Serial.println("Type in the ID # you want delete...");
  uint8_t id = 0;
  while (true) {
    while (! Serial.available());
    char c = Serial.read();
    if (! isdigit(c)) break;
    id *= 10;
    id += c - '0';
  }
  Serial.print("deleting ID #");
  Serial.println(id);

  deleteFingerprint(id);
}

uint8_t deleteFingerprint(uint8_t id) {
  uint8_t p = -1;

  p = finger.deleteModel(id);

    return p;
  } else if (p == FINGERPRINT_BADLOCATION) {
    Serial.println("Could not delete in that location");

  } else if (p == FINGERPRINT_FLASHERR) {
    Serial.println("Error writing to flash");
    return p;
  } else {
    Serial.print("Unknown error: 0x"); Serial.println(p, HEX);
    return p;
  }
}

Upload to Arduino board

Open Serial Monitor, and baud rate set is : 9600 // Carriage return

Specify the fingerprint data code to delete. Then click 'Send'. For example the in database, the code is '6'.

After click 'Send button' then the fingerprint data with code 6 has been erased.

Fill in the fingerprint data code with different code that you want to be deleted
